About Tamara Wells

Captain Tamara Wells operates out of Annapolis, Maryland, guiding anglers on the legendary Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Over her 10-year career, she has built a reputation as one of the region's top light-tackle striped bass guides and has become one of the go-to experts for the bay's booming blue catfish fishery. She runs a 24-foot bay boat rigged for both species.

Tamara's striped bass trips focus on the art of light-tackle casting and jigging, targeting fish from spring through fall along the bay's structure, points, and channel edges. Her blue catfish trips offer nonstop action, with the invasive blues now thriving in Chesapeake tributaries and providing some of the best rod-bending excitement on the East Coast. She's committed to educating anglers about the bay's ecosystem and the important role that harvest plays in managing blue catfish populations.

Latest Fishing Report

2026-04-01

The spring striper season is heating up on the Chesapeake Bay. The trophy fish are pushing into the upper bay and the Susquehanna Flats, following the herring and white perch runs. We've been catching fish in the 28-36 inch range on soft plastic jerkbaits and paddle tails fished on light jig heads around rocky points and channel edges.

Blue catfish have been on fire in the Potomac and Choptank rivers. Fresh cut gizzard shad on circle hooks fished in 15-25 feet of water has been producing limits of blues in the 5-15 pound range, with a few bruisers over 30 pounds mixed in. These fish fight hard and taste great — it's a win-win fishery and a great option for families and groups looking for nonstop action.

Water temps across the bay are in the mid-50s and rising. The spring pattern should continue to build through April and into May, with the light-tackle trophy striper season peaking in the next few weeks. Blue catfish are available year-round but the spring bite is particularly strong right now.
